When Wavves unleashed the frenetic *King of the Beach* in 2010 — the album that put them on the musical map — they epitomized the zeitgeist. Black Lips had already paved the way, akin to an older sibling, for a generation of rowdy punk bands; Pitchfork found reasons to talk about No Age or Harlem; Vice had its label for releasing youthful rock with the perfect blend of fun and danger, and Jay Reatard had become a legend following his demise. The ripple effect reached the Iberian Peninsula, with bands like Mujeres, Modernos (featuring Capitão Fausto members), The Parrots, or Cave Story spreading garage party vibes. In this milieu, Wavves were self-explanatory: Nathan Williams’ project was undoubtedly a product of its time. Fifteen years later, not only has the landscape around Wavves changed, but the group’s own essence has also transformed. Such is life: they have transitioned from punk adolescence to power-pop maturity, embodied in *Spun*, their latest album, the first since 2021.
